İstanbul Tıp Fak. Radyoterapi BD A retrospective analysis of patients with grade-III astrocytoma treated between the years of 1969-1979 is presented. Thirty-nine patients completed the planned radiation treatment and followed up completely. All cases were referred for radiation therapy after surgical management. The following treatments were applied: Radiotherapy only in 16 (% 41) cases, Partialy resection and postoperative radiotherapy in 22 (% 56) cases, Total tumor resection and radiotherapy in 1 case. Nineteen patients received radical radiotherapy (T.D.F.(76), others had palliative radiotherapy. The crude 3 and 5 year survival rates for patients with grade-III tumors were %13 and °7o 10 respectively. Median survival values were 19 months, for the whole group and 17 months for the dead. This study shows that radiation therapy is an important method to improve the general condition and prolongs the survival of the patients with grade-III astrocytoma and three prognostic factors as extend of surgery, age and radiation dose should be considered when these tumors are studied.
